Whether or not one believes that Amazon.com's (NASDAQ: AMZN ) current stock price is justified, one investment opinion that is completely justified is the Internet giant's retail strength. In sharp contrast to RadioShack's depressing trading day yesterday, Amazon shares have stepped over the $300 per share mark as we speak. Investors might want to wait for temporary weakness to buy in, but intrinsically, this is a far stronger company.

"India is one of the world's most promising and problematic Internet markets," wrote Brad Stone and Kartikay Mehrotra in a recentBusinessweek article. They're spot on. The combination of very undeveloped Internet and e-commerce infrastructure; adoption of Internet-connected devices in droves; and a massive population of 1 billion people all set the stage for opportunity -- albeit with significant risk. eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY ) thinks it can buck system, but it may take a while.

But the key to payment processing's future remains the mobile market, and there, VeriFone faces huge competition. eBay's (NASDAQ: EBAY ) PayPal has consistently upped the ante in mobile payments, with incentives like offering transaction-fee-free processing for businesses that replace cash registers with iPad-based transaction management. With smaller companies like Square and Flint having emerged in the mobile space, it's likely only a matter of time before bigger companies acquire the upstarts to move their mobile-payment presence forward. For instance, if Groupon (NASDAQ: GRPN ) is serious about trying to make waves in mobile payments, purchasing Square would be a natural fit for the company.

(YHOO), which owns a big chunk of the Chinese internet giant, saw 231 million shares traded, the most since Microsoft (MSFT) it would no longer buy the company back in May 2008. Overall, 8.6 billion shares changed hands today, the fourth highest volume of the year.

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via Getty Images Apple (AAPL) and Alibaba (BABA) could soon be collaborators. At The Wall Street Journal's WSJD live event, Alibaba's founder and Executive Chairman Jack Ma was asked whether he would consider a partnership between Apple Pay and Alipay, Alibaba's payments company. "I am very interested in that," Ma said. "A good marriage needs both sides to work." When asked about such a partnership Apple CEO Tim Cook said, "We are going to talk about getting married later this week," adding, "I have the utmost respect for Jack." It's been just over a week, but Cook says Apple Pay is already a big success. Within the first 72 hours of Apple Pay's debut, the new mobile payment service had already exceeded more than one million card activations, he said. "We are just getting started," Cook said. He expects more merchants to adopt the service because he believes it's an easier, faster and more secure way to buy goods. However, some merchants such as CVS (CVS) and Rite Aid (RAD) have refused the service. Cook called the tension between Apple and these merchants a "skirmish." Apple Pay is currently available at 220,000 locations around the country. Cook went on to talk about a wide range of subjects including activist investor Carl Icahn's call for Apple to boost its buyback program. Cook defended Apple's current capital return program, noting that the company bought back $17 billion of stock last quarter alone. "I don't spend a lot of time talking to Carl," Cook said. Apple recently reported quarterly results that beat analyst estimates, selling nearly 40 million iPhones. iPad shipments, however, missed wall street's expectations. Cook remains confident in that product, however, noting that the tablet is now used in a variety of markets, from education to enterprise. "I am very excited about that business," Cook said. Apple's CEO also made a point of saying that the tech titan isn't in the business of collecting, storing

Advisors' Opinion:- [By James E. Brumley]
Truth be told, oil giant Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL) and major oil player Denbury Resources Inc. (NYSE:DNR) aren't likely worried about little ol' Propell Technologies Group Inc. (OTCBB:PROP)... at least not yet. Their lack of concern may end up being a big mistake, though. Propell Technologies Group has developed a new piece of oil well technology that can rejuvenate a struggling oil flow that might just make names like Denbury Resources and Halliburton green with envy.

Although oil prices are at multi year lows, nowmight be the time to start taking a closer look atsmall cap gas compression or enhanced oil recovery (EOR) stocks like TETRA Technologies, Inc (NYSE: TTI), Exterran Holdings, Inc (NYSE: EXH) and Propell Technologies Group Inc (OTCBB: PROP)as oil and natural gas prices willinevitably rise once again. To start with, natural gas compression services areneeded to transport natural gas from low-pressure wells into gathering systems, storage and processing facilitiesas well as to maintain production as reservoir pressure declines. In addition, compression servicesare used to extract gas fromunconventional natural gas sources like shale plays. As for so-called enhanced oil recovery or EOR, itsa generic term for the techniques used for increasing the amount of crude oil that can be extracted from an oil field with these potential methods including steam flood and water flood injectionor hydraulic fracturing(so-called fracking). Naturally, demand for compression services and EOR technologies are impacted by (the temporary)low oil and gas commodity prices and so are the share prices for publicly traded stocks in the space.

Just this year, top activist investors have made a lot of waves in the market. A few of the more prominent examples:
A series of mid-August tweets (the first on Aug. 13) from Carl Icahn, perhaps the best-known activist investor of them all, has helped push Apple stock up 5%. Icahn is urging Apple CEO Tim Cook to step up its stock buyback program. The dramatic announcement that CEO Steve Ballmer would be surrendering the reins to Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) within 12 months was driven in large part by efforts of hedge fund ValueAct. The activist shareholder used its large stake in the company to get a seat on the board. Among the items on ValueAct's agenda was a change at the top. MSFT shot up 7% on the day of the announcement. Activist investor Bill Ackman finally threw in the towel this week on his three-year attempt to revive the fortunes of troubled retailer J.C. Penney. He sold his entire 18% stake, 39 million shares, to Citigroup on Aug. 26 for a loss of some $500 million. The episode has helped erase 50% of the value of Penney stock, although the announcement that Ackman had bailed out did give JCP a 2.5% boost. Dan Loeb had much better luck than Ackman with Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO). After building up a 5% stake over 2011 and 2012, Loeb pushed for the ouster of CEO Scott Thomson in favor of Marissa Mayer and persuaded the company to sell 7% of its stake in Chinese Internet company Alibaba. Yahoo bought back Loeb's shares in July, but was able to pocket a profit of nearly 80% - as were any YHOO shareholders who were along for the ride. In one of the craziest cases of activist investing, Ackman and Icahn squared off over nutritional-supplement maker Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE: HLF) earlier this year. Ackman shorted the stock while Icahn increased his stake. The fight sparked a lot of short-term volatility, but at this point Icahn is winning big time - HLF is up a whopping 75% since the battle began in February. - [By Chris Hill]

Though high-tech stocks are not typically considered risk-averse, Google could be the one stock in the market that goes against this conventional wisdom. Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg via Getty Images By Kayla Tausche and Amara Omeokwe Twitter executives have spent weeks on Wall Street and in major U.S. cities touting the company's highly anticipated initial public offering, set to take place this week. But despite their best efforts to pitch the site's profit prospects in mobile, international growth and TV integration, investors are still skeptical, results from a new AP-CNBC poll show. According to the poll, nearly half of active investors -- those who had adjusted their holdings within the last year -- say Twitter would not be a good investment. That sentiment is stronger from higher-income respondents; some 56 percent of those with incomes of $75,000 a year have doubts about its investment prospects. While the survey's respondents remain anonymous, some potential investors have taken to Twitter -- ironically -- to talk about its investment prospects. "I will wait and see how the price action looks for awhile before I jump in," said Jason Whitman, a Wyoming-based optometrist who considers himself a "risk-tolerant" investor, in a Tweet. "I will not be investing until I see how $TWTR will make a profit," tweeted Matthew Sigafus, a 35 year-old nurse practitioner from Philadelphia who invests on the side. Conventional wisdom would say Twitter's most frequent users -- which, according to an August 2013 study at Pew Research Center, are adults aged 18-29 -- would have the most faith in its future. The AP-CNBC study showed that to be only partly true. More than half of Americans under age 35 do think Twitter will be a success in five years, but they're not sold on investing. Fifty-two percent of respondents 18-34 said they wouldn't put their money in it. Millennials seem to be wary of buying stocks in general. In a Wells Fargo (WFC) survey of 1,500 adults aged 22 to 32, more than half said they were "not very" or "not at all" confident in the stock market as a place to invest their money.
