Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
It difficult and worrisome to consider scenarios for gold equities other than inflationary ones. But the historical record does include success for gold equities in deflationary times too. The fundamentals for this strength are more difficult to reconcile with the risk that gold prices may outperform not by rising but by not falling. Listed gold equities Homestake Mining subsequently purchased by Barrick Gold (ABX) and Dome Mines, now parts of Goldcorp were operating in the 1930s and outperformed. Part of this outperformance probably resulted from the way that the gold price stepped higher as Washington tried to devalue the dollar to kick start growth but part of this probably resulted from the simplicity of gold equities compared to other listed equities that require a strong economy to perform.

Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX), the world largest producer of the metal, plans to sell shares to raise as much as $3.45 billion to help reduce its debt, which has increased this year as the price of the commodity declined.

Gold reacts
Gold, as represented by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD ) , fell quickly on the remarks, but bounced back to unchanged in short order. The gold miners -- including Barrick (NYSE: ABX ) , Goldcorp (NYSE: GG ) , and Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM ) had similar reactions (see chart). Looking ahead, the Fed is expecting U.S. GDP growth of 2.3% to 2.6% in 2013, accelerating to 3% to 3.5% in 2014. This growth is expected to come against a backdrop of falling unemployment, and an inflation rate in line with the targeted 2% rate set by the Fed. - [By Tom Aspray]
The cut in the dividend of Barrick Gold (ABX) will put more pressure on the beaten-down gold miners. The rebound in gold still looks to me like a bull trap as the OBV has already broken down and is likely leading prices lower. A close in GLD below $124 should be enough to signal another wave of selling.
