Finance guru Jeremy Siegel says the Dow could increase another 6% this year and at least 10% next year. The index has already moved up 25% so far this year, and he sees it between 16,000 and 17,000 by year end.
The Wharton professor, speaking on CNBC on Monday, reminded investors that the final two months of the year “are usually pretty good months.” Plus, no major uncertainties hang over the markets, “at least in these two months coming up," he says.
“I think the economy is going to hold on here,” Siegel said. In 2014, he sees GDP improving to 3% or as high as 3.5%.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up about 22 points, and trading above 15,590 mid-Monday.
Siegel sees tailwinds for the Dow as fourth-quarter results are released. In addition, dividends have improved 10%-15% this year and are “rising strong.”
“This is a very favorable climate still for equities,” Siegel stressed.
Meanwhile, the Standard & Poor's 500 index was up more than 23% in 2013 through Friday.

The average MLP closed-end fund listed trades at a 4.9 percent discount, which is perhaps reasonable given the loss of certain tax advantages and the fact that management fees will eat into returns.

But you can see in several places the consequences of the stampede toward high yield. Here are just a few:
Closed-end funds Cornerstone Progressive (NYSEMKT: CFP ) and Pimco High Income (NYSE: PHK ) both make fixed payments back to fund shareholders on a monthly basis, and their distribution yields are truly extraordinary, at about 17% and 12%, respectively. Those dividends have enticed shareholders to pay $1.30 to $1.40 or more for each $1 of assets in the funds. Yet during most months, a substantial portion of those distribution payments has simply been a return of investor capital rather than true income from the funds' investments. A recent study discussed in The Wall Street Journal found that returns on a portfolio with a combined value and dividend-income strategy outperformed a strategy focused more exclusively on maximizing dividends by an average of 1.7 percentage points per year, a huge edge in long-run returns. In the dividend ETF arena, most funds tend to focus on maximizing yield. Although the popular Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (NYSEMKT: VIG ) ETF bucks the trend by screening first for consistent dividend growth and only then looking at yield as a factor, many rival ETFs start with high-yielding stocks as their baseline and only then consider other desirable traits. Others focus solely on high-dividend niches of the market, such as iShares FTSE NAREIT Mortgage-Plus (NYSEMKT: REM ) and its concentration on high-yield mortgage REITs.When dividend stocks get too popular, their prices get out of line with both their dividend income and the fundamentals of the businesses that underlie those stocks. In simpler terms, when dividend stocks become bad values, it's time to consider looking elsewhere for a margin of safety.

What to seek and avoid
When you're seeking dividend investments, go ahead and favor hefty dividend yields, but be wary when they're really hefty, because they might be unsustainable. Seek healthy and growing companies, too, and ones that are not paying out more in dividends than they're actually earning. For a sobering lesson, check out an article from October of last year by my colleague Brian Stoffel, who wrote about "3 Extremely Dangerous Dividends," discussing rural telecom specialist Windstream (NASDAQ: WIN ) , supermarket concern Roundy's (NYSE: RNDY ) , and electronics retailer RadioShack (NYSE: RSH ) . It hasn't been much more than five months since the article was published, and while Windstream's payout is intact, RadioShack's has disappeared, and Roundy's has roughly been cut in half. Windstream may have low profit margins and a lot of debt, but it's been investing in new directions and growing its revenue. Roundy's is also saddled with debt and low margins, and operates in a tough industry. Still, it's at least free-cash-flow positive. RadioShack has long been struggling and recently posted shrinking quarterly revenue and widening losses. One ray of hope is its new CEO, turnaround specialist Joseph Magnacca. - [By kcpl]
Windstream (WIN) has an eye-propping dividend yield of 11.30% that should attracted many investors looking for high-dividend yield stocks. Windstream pays a higher dividend in comparison to its peers. In addition, stock has appreciated over 10% since the start of the year. Windstream offers voice and data network communications services in the U.S., competing against the likes of CenturyLink and Frontier Communications.

The first thing to realize about StoneMor is that arcane and flexible accounting rules make it important to dig beneath its GAAP earnings. Growth throughout the industry has been substantial, as up-and-coming Carriage Services (NYSE: CSV ) continued to stay on pace for double-digit sales growth as it rapidly expands its reach. Even well-established player Matthews International (NASDAQ: MATW ) managed to grow revenue by nearly 14% in the quarter that ended in March, although its earnings fell slightly from the year-ago quarter. Still, StoneMor's sales haven't been able to rise as quickly as its peers, with its previous report including just a 6% gain in revenue.

While it's not obvious from the chart, you can separate these institutions into three different buckets. The first bucket concerns the most widely discussed too-big-to-fail banks: JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo. Then comes the unofficial too-big-to-fail lenders (those with assets in excess of $50 billion and thus subject to the Federal Reserve's more stringent stress test process). This group contains U.S. Bank (NYSE: USB ) , PNC Financial (NYSE: PNC ) , and BB&T Bank (NYSE: BBT ) , among others. And the final group encompasses lesser-known banks like First Niagara Financial (NASDAQ: FNFG ) and People's United Financial (NASDAQ: PBCT ) with between $20 billion and $50 billion in assets.
